Free Tennis Coaching at Rossendale
There was a good roll up of beginners for the Free
Adults Tennis Coaching on Saturday 16th May from
9.30am-12.30pm. It was held at the Rossendale Tennis
Club on the Bauple/Woolooga Rd with Qualified Coach
Ken Hicks from Gladstone. Ken, who has been coaching
others for 41 years, spoke and demonstrated the
techniques of hitting the ball, including forehand,
backhand, serving, turning the body whilst hitting
the ball, how to hold the racquet correctly, and
control of the ball by keeping it on the racquet
longer. There was a free bbq lunch provided, cooked
by Roland Doom, and also fruit and drinks for all
participants. Other interesting snippets of
information included how women are more flexible in
the elbows than men, and learning to hit the ball in
regard to eye dominance. The training was funded by
the Department of Sport and Recreation Club
Recreation Program, and also includes 2 supervised
“free” come-and -try days for Juniors at the
Rossendale Tennis Club with Coach Bruce Rayner from
Maryborough on the 9th May and 30th May from
9am-12am, and then 1pm-3pm. Bruce is Head Coach at
Maryborough Junior Tennis Association, Tennis
Australia Accredited & Certified Advanced Coach.
9th May Junior Coaching attracted 17 children
ranging from ages 5-17yrs, and everyone enjoyed the
day. Numbers are limited, so to ensure an
opportunity for a free lesson for 30th May,
interested persons can contact Mary-Anne Walters on
4129 2589, or 0438 374 091 or email mwalters2@aapt.net.au
Tennis is played at the Rossendale Tennis Club every

looking for new members. Yearly membership from
January-December is $5 for adults, and $2 for
children and players must register with Tennis QLD

want to try a new way of keeping fit, come along a
join in, the club is just off the Bruce Highway near
